What do we learn

Students explore a range of ethical, philosophical, and religious topics through three key components.

Component 1: Ethical Themes

Theme 1 – Relationships and Families

  • Marriage, divorce and remarriage

  • Same-sex relationships

  • Gender equality

  • Contraception and adultery

  • Religious views on family life

Theme 2 – Life and Death

  • Origins of the universe (creation and evolution)

  • Stewardship and dominion

  • Value of human life

  • Abortion and euthanasia

  • Beliefs about the afterlife

Component 2: Study of Christianity

  • Christianity in Britain

  • The Trinity

  • Incarnation, crucifixion, resurrection and ascension

  • Salvation, sin and judgement

Component 3: Study of Buddhism

  • Life of Siddhartha Gautama

  • The Four Sights and Three Marks of Existence

  • The Four Noble Truths

  • The Eightfold Path

  • Karma and rebirth

  • The Five Precepts and Six Perfections

  • Nirvana and Samsara

Why do we learn it

Religious Studies helps students understand the diverse world around them and encourages respect for different beliefs and cultures. It develops critical thinking, empathy, and the ability to engage with complex moral and ethical issues.

How do we assess it (Diff accreditations etc)

Students follow the Eduqas GCSE short course.

  • Four separate exams

  • Each exam includes:

  • 2-mark questions (knowledge recall)

  • 5-mark questions (explanation)

  • 8-mark questions (analysis)

  • 15-mark questions (evaluation and extended writing)

How do we do? results

Students make strong progress in RE, developing excellent written communication, analytical thinking, and evaluation skills. These transferable skills support achievement across a wide range of subjects.

Religious Studies supports progression into many careers, including:

  • Politics and public service

Key Stage 3:

  • 1 × 60-minute lesson per week

Key Stage 4:

  • 2 × 60-minute lessons per week
